During my 15 years as executive director of the San Juan Preservation Trust, I’ve worked for 64 dedicated volunteers who have served on our Board of Trustees. The diversity of their backgrounds would astonish anyone who isn’t familiar with our island demographic: from authors, artists and scientists to academics, lawyers and leaders in the business and government sectors, every single one of these accomplished women and men have enlightened the path that this organization has taken.

SJPT’s stewardship staff members (all three of them) rely on our hardy volunteers to help pull weeds, build trails, and accomplish other important field work. For really big jobs, however, we have made increasing use of Washington Conservation Corps crews. Love ‘em or hate ‘em (or a bit of both), drones—the remote-controlled, helicopter-like gadgets that have inspired a whole new generation of potato guns—can be a valuable tool for conservationists. Organizations from The Nature Conservancy to the National Audubon Society are using them to track wildlife, monitor controlled burns, and map habitat.
